david lawson-smith

David gained a scholarship to play 'cello at Perth Modern School and then read English at the University of Western Australia.

 

David has sung as baritone soloist for Mozart's Requiem and Brahms' Deutches Requiem, performed lead roles in Ruddigore and Oklahoma! and principal roles in Cosi fan tutte, Die Fledermaus, Paint Your Wagon, Tom Jones and The Sentimental Bloke, as well as many opera choruses. Theatre roles include the leads in Lend Me a Tenor, Neil Simon's The Odd Couple and David Williamson’s Brilliant Lies, and principal roles in Neil Simon’s Rumors, Alan Ayckbourne’s Time of My Life, also Sitting Pretty, Caravan, experimental theatre at La Mama and numerous short films and plays.

 

David won the 2013 Lyrebird for Best Actor, Comedy. David was Assistant Director at Melbourne Opera from 2012 to 2014. In 2014 he directed U.S.S. Pinafore for the Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Victoria, for which he also wrote the libretto. In 2015 he translated and rewrote the libretto for, then directed Donizett's Rita. He also wrote, composed and directed his second pantomime The Snow Queen. David has directed many plays for companies such as Peridot Theatre, 1812 Theatre, Hartwell Players, Louis Nowra's Cosi at Doncaster Playhouse, Short + Sweet, Crash Test Drama and Play in a Day. He is a boardmember of Peridot Theatre.

 

This year he has directed and acted in a touring production, been production co-ordinator for Les Liaisons Dangereuses, had a principal role in Much Ado About Nothing at Doncaster Playhouse and is Co-ordinator for the Monash One
